Greece extends the national lockdown until March 16, after reporting 2,702 new cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, the highest number recorded so far since the beginning of the year. “We are in the most difficult part of this pandemic,” Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias told reporters, warning that public health facilities in Athens have been under “unbearable pressure” for weeks. “With the pace of new hospitalizations, the health system is pushed beyond its limits in terms of infrastructure and personnel,” the minister said, adding that a “major increase” in cases was noted due to the British variant.
In addition to the lockdown, restrictive measures will be strengthened starting tomorrow to prevent citizens from crossing municipal borders and discourage them from shopping or exercising outdoors. “The measures are aimed at reducing mobility. Let’s stay at home, in our neighborhoods,” Nikos Hardalias, Deputy Chief of Civil Protection, said at a press conference.
