Covid-19 – The oximeter, a valuable monitoring tool – News

Less well-known than the thermometer, the pulse oximeter is a small device essential in the management of Covid-19. It makes it possible to measure the quantity of oxygen in the blood and thus to detect serious forms which, without it, could go unnoticed.

An oximeter is a simple, reliable, and inexpensive device that measures the amount of oxygen in the blood. Placed at the tip of the finger, it gives in a few seconds a measurement called saturation or SpO2. This is important data to watch out for in the event of Covid-19, because this infection causes serious decreases in oxygen levels (hypoxia) which are not necessarily manifested by respiratory symptoms (neither shortness of breath nor difficulty taking air).

In sick people at risk (age over 70, obesity, heart disorder, respiratory failure, diabetes, etc.), it is therefore recommended to take this measurement twice a day (1). Under these conditions, having a home oximeter can be very useful. A value above 98% is normal. Less than 95%, it constitutes a first level of alert. Below 92%, hospitalization is usually necessary.
