Covid-19 Task Force Expert Team: Dexamethasone Only for Severe Condition Corona Patients

Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – The Task Force Expert Team for the Acceleration of Covid-19 Handling Agus Dwi Susanto stressed the use of dexamethasone for positive patients Covid-19 is only given to patients with severe conditions.

Agus explained Covid-19 positive patients with severe conditions were characterized by the use of respiratory aids such as oxygen therapy and ventilators.

“Research from the recovery trial says that Dexamethasone has a positive impact in reducing mortality, especially in patients using ventilators and oxygen therapy,” Agus said during a statement at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Jakarta, on Monday (29/6 / 2020).

Meanwhile, he explained, the use of positive patients with mild diagnosis did not have a good and significant impact on the treatment process. Instead, he revealed, its use can have many side effects.

“From the efficacy side, it seems there is no benefit. Second, there are quite a lot of side effects, “he said.

He said the results of early research showed the use of dexamethasone for positive patients with Covid-19 with severe conditions had a fairly good trend.

“Since the recovery trial came out some colleagues have used it in practice in severe patients. There is good progress if the patient enters early in severe degrees. But if it’s too late it’s not very good but this is the conclusion of one or two people too early, “he said.

The World Health Organization (WHO) calls for accelerating the production of dexamethasone, an inexpensive steroid that has been shown to reduce mortality in seriously ill corona virus patients.

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said demand for the steroid drug increased after the drug trial in the UK was published. He believes that production can be increased.

About 2,000 patients were given drugs by researchers led by a team from Oxford University and from the results of the study, the death rate could be reduced by 35 percent among the most severe patients, according to findings published last week.

“Although the data are still preliminary, recent findings that the steroid dexsamethasone has the potential to save lives for critically ill Covid-19 patients give us much-needed reasons to support it,” Tedros told a virtual press conference in Geneva, as quoted by ChannelNewsAsia.com, Tuesday (6/23/2020).
