The average number of covid-19 cases in Portugal has been on a downward trend for nine days. The peak of the 3rd wave of the pandemic in Portugal was reported to be on January 28, with a daily average of 12,891 new cases. NEW CASES IN PORTUGAL

The drop in new cases allowed Portugal to move down to 4th worldwide position, behind Montenegro, Israel and the Czech Republic – the countries that currently report the most new cases, per one million inhabitants. Portugal was between 19 January and 5 February at the top of the table, 17 days without any other country reporting so many cases, 15 of which with average values ​​above a thousand cases per one million inhabitants – currently no country has such a high incidence.

In the current analysis of deaths, also per million inhabitants, Portugal still remains in 1st position, ahead of Monaco (with an absolute residual value), Slovakia and the United Kingdom. Portugal has also been in the first position for 17 days, since January 21.

WEEKLY AVERAGE PER 1 MILLION INHABITANTS

Not all countries report pandemic indicators daily and fluctuations throughout the week are known. In comparisons with other countries, the average weekly value or the 14-day incidence – a reference indicator of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) – are more stable indicators that mitigate inconsistencies and daily fluctuations and cover a larger universe countries.

On December 28, the Portuguese value of new contaminations skyrocketed sharply from other European partners, and from all other countries that report the pandemic data, and remained so for a month. The Portuguese trajectory currently remains demarcated from the average of the other Member States but has been visibly declining since 28 January.

Also on a downward trend is the average number of deaths reported daily: 23.5 per one million inhabitants. The current European Union average is 6.9 per one million inhabitants.

In total, 7.5 cases per 100 inhabitants have already been reported, which is the 10th highest percentage in the world. In absolute numbers, the 765 thousand reported cases, since the beginning of the pandemic until this Sunday, placed Portugal in the 23rd relative position, between Canada and Chile.

TOTAL CASES

In reported deaths, from the start of the pandemic to this Sunday, the 1389 deaths per one million inhabitants place Portugal in 10th place, far above Sweden (22) or France (21) with which we compared ourselves a few days ago. In absolute numbers, this position drops to 27th, just below the Netherlands.
