Since the start of the pandemic, Quebec has recorded 58,414 people declared positive for COVID-19. In total, there were 5,666 fatalities, including three more deaths, including one that occurred before July 18.

Nearly 30,000 tests

Ontario now has 38,543 infections and 2,759 deaths (+1). What clearly distinguishes the most populous province in the country from its neighbor Quebec, however, is the number of tests that are carried out on a daily basis.

The latest count in Ontario shows nearly 30,000 withdrawals, compared to 16,716 for Quebec on July 23, the latest date for which data is available. On Saturday, the Ontario authorities had also exceeded the mark of 2 million tests carried out since the start of the health crisis, against 1.1 million for La Belle Province.

Across Canada, more than 3.7 million people have been tested for COVID-19 to date.

It should be noted that Manitoba brought its number of patients to 388 by declaring four new infections on Saturday, while Saskatchewan announced for its part 37 new cases, for a total of 1,136.

Nova Scotia has reached the 10-day mark without any new cases.

Since February, the new coronavirus has affected 113,556 (+350) Canadians, including 8,885 (+4) who have lost their fight against the disease.

A “particularly worrying” increase in cases

In a statement, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Dr.re Therera Tam said on Saturday that the “recent increase in the number of cases reported across the country is of particular concern.”

“We expected to see an increase in the number of reported cases with the reopening of social and economic spaces,” she continued. Acting quickly to identify and detect cases, and conduct contact tracing is essential to stem outbreaks and transmission of the disease. ”

Canadians have made significant efforts in recent months to block the road to the virus, but the situation is fragile and COVID-19 is still poised to strike, she insisted.

“I want Canadians to understand that for all of our successes, one moment of thoughtlessness, neglect and forgetfulness will be enough to undermine everything we’ve accomplished together,” added Dr.re Tam.
