COVID-19: more than 300 new cases, young people in the crosshairs

Young people are more than ever in the crosshairs of public health authorities in Canadian provinces, while the number of new cases of COVID-19 is stuck on a plateau in Canada, or even goes up in places.

By the end of the day Tuesday, Canada had 331 more patients with COVID-19, mostly in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta, for a total of 108,486 cases to date. Eight deaths have also been reported, including five in Quebec, for a total of 8,798 Canadians who died after contracting the virus.

Once again, Quebec announced more than a hundred new cases (+109), a major trend in the past week. However, the previous week, the Belle Province had crossed this milestone only once in ten days.

The screening clinics in Montérégie and Montreal did not fail, Tuesday, after the call made several times to customers of bars to go for testing. Many young people answered the call and could be seen in the metropolitan queues.

Alberta rebound

Quebec is not alone in having to manage outbreaks due to parties and the resumption of nightlife. Alberta, which has recorded 86 new cases in 24 hours, as well as two deaths, has to contend with a revival of the pandemic, the province having accumulated 780 infections in two weeks.

According to Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dre Deena Hinshaw, 57% of new cases involve people under the age of 40.

“The Prime Minister [Jason Kenney] and I are concerned about the recent increase in the number of cases we are seeing, as well as the lower average age of people infected with the virus, “said Drre Hinshaw in a press briefing, saying she fears that Albertans will stop listening to public health recommendations.

British Columbia had previously linked outbreaks to Canada Day celebrations.

Stable in Ontario

For its part, Ontario released a record very similar to that of the last few days, with 111 new infections and one more death.

The City of Toronto however called for help Tuesday when it faces a shortfall of $ 1.35 billion.

Elsewhere in the country, Manitoba ended 13 consecutive no-case days with five positive results announced at once.

Ironically, Prime Minister Brian Pallister chose Tuesday to launch a tourism campaign to encourage Manitobans, but also Canadians across the country, to visit the Prairie Province.

“We know that we cannot continue to live in fear. That said, we have to be responsible while relaxing the health rules, ”argued Mr. Pallister.
