After more than 100 days of quarantine mandatory by pandemic, Dr. Martín Lombardero (MP 79,096) evidenced that the main cause of death in Argentina, far from the coronavirus, continue to be cardiovascular diseases, with a number of 280 deaths per day.
In dialogue with Chain 3, the cardiac imaging specialist indicated: “The main cause of death remains the same in ours and in all developed countries: cardiovascular mortality.”

The doctor delved into the figures from the last registry of the year 2017, in which 97,219 deaths per year were reported out of a total of 341,688, which means 28.5% of global mortality in Argentina.
On the other hand, Lombardero recalled that, from the beginning of the year 2000 to 2012, there was a 22% reduction in mortality in the sector thanks to “interventionism, consultations and the technology that medicine added.”

However, he warned that “that percentage was lost” as a result of the few medical consultations that are not made in time due to the “fear of the coronavirus.”
People are afraid and do not move
“That 22% was lost today, because people do not consult. From the works that I presented, it is seen that there are 50% fewer consultations and scheduled surgeries, for example,” he lamented.

And then he compared: “In April 2020, unlike April 2019, there is a higher in-hospital mortality with admission of patients with a heart attack. And that is significant, because the patient arrives late by not consulting on time.”
The negative health consequences of confinement
Lombardero emphasized the serious effects of the quarantine on the health of Argentines and specified: “What remains to be counted are those who are going to die of depression due to the loss (due to the economic crisis) and the feeling of hopelessness.”

“It is true that Covid-19 is six times more powerful than the common flu. But in 2018, there were 31,000 deaths in Argentina due to influenza, of which 13,000 were older than 84 years,” he detailed.

In that line, he completed: “The Covid-19 kills over 65, because immunity is lower. If it is worse than the flu, but it is just one more calamity we have.”
On the future outlook, the doctor maintained that it would be “regrettable” that in three years “an increase in cardiovascular mortality” as a consequence of an extensive quarantine was registered.
“The virus will circulate the same, unless nobody does anything. But, even if we are locked up and the doctors do not go to work in the sanitariums, the virus will circulate the same. That is why we must prepare ourselves and comply with the sanitary recommendations to avoid the spread, “he concluded.
