Covid-19, how to get treated at home. The advice of the virologist

“Everyone should be followed by the family doctor or by another doctor who takes care of the therapy”, explains Professor Massimo Clementi

Between paucisymptomatic and asymptomatic, there are many cases of positive people coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 that do not require hospitalization. But how do you cure the Covid-19 at home? “First of all, do-it-yourself should be avoided”, warns Professor Massimo Clementi, full professor of Microbiology and Virology at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and director of the Microbiology and Virology Laboratory of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. “Everyone should be followed by the family doctor or another doctor who takes care of the therapy, especially in its continuation, because there may also be accelerations of the infection and changes in the patient’s health status”.

What does Covid-19 therapy usually consist of at home?
“At the moment we don’t have specific drugs that need to be used right away. Usually home therapy, especially for elderly people or people with risk factors, consists of heparin, cortisone and possibly an aggregate anti-inflammatory (the so-called NSAIDs). One of the aspects to be monitored carefully, especially in the elderly, is oxygen saturation, which must never drop below 90. But above all, it is good to intervene when the first symptoms appear, even while waiting for the result of a tampon. which in any case must be done as soon as possible “.

In a season like winter, when a cold or a simple flu can happen, if a person has cold symptoms must they still follow therapy as if it were a suspected Covid-19?
“I do not suggest starting immediately with an anti Covid therapy. This should only be done if there is at least one clue: a contact with a positive person, very suggestive symptoms such as loss of smell or taste or a breathing difficulty that was not there before. Otherwise let’s consider it a seasonal disorder and treat it as usual, for example with tachipirina or aspirin, if there are no other symptoms. But I always recommend that you consult your doctor, also because in the case of Covid-19 the timeliness of the intervention is fundamental, when the viral infection still prevails over the rest of the symptoms. Among other things it must be said that this year, unlike in past years, the cases of influenza they are few or no. We are noticing what had already been observed last summer in the southern hemisphere: the substantial disappearance of the flu ”.

Why?
“It may be due to distancing and hygiene measures, to a greater impact vaccination flu or a kind of competition between viruses that infect the same pathways. But it is clear that many cases of acute respiratory infection today are from Sars-CoV-2 ″.
