The governor of California on Sunday ordered the closure of bars in Los Angeles and six other counties in this southwestern US state that is experiencing a rebound in the pandemic of new coronavirus.
“Due to rising Covid-19 cases, California is ordering bars to close in Fresno, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, San Joaquin and Tulare,” Democrat Gavin Newsom tweeted, “advising” eight other counties, including that of the state capital Sacramento, do the same.
The governor, who quickly adopted containment measures to slow the spread of the new coronavirus, authorized the reopening of Californian bars on June 12, while leaving the last word to the authorities of the 58 counties. Los Angeles, the second largest city in the United States, had left its establishments open on June 19.
But the number of Covid-19 cases has been on the rise recently in California with an increase of about 30% in hospitalizations in the past week.
“We cannot continue as we have done in recent weeks,” Governor Newsom warned this week. “I am not naive, people are mixing and this is increasing the spread of this virus,” he added.
This revival affects the entire South and West of the United States, with a noticeable increase in the disease among young people. Faced with this outbreak, the governors of Texas and Florida were also forced to order the bars to close again.
In contrast, the new coronavirus continues to decline in the Northeast, which has long been the epicenter of the pandemic. California is the first state to order general containment in late March.
With more than 2.5 million confirmed cases and 125,700 deaths, the United States is the most affected country in the world.
