The researchers developed an algorithm that was to select the biomarkers with the greatest significance for mortality from all the parameters offered. The mathematical model was fed with general patient data, symptoms and blood values such as liver and kidney values, coagulation ability, electrolytes and inflammation markers. According to the analysis, the most significant biomarkers were the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), the lymphocyte count and the hs-CRP value. The result is plausible, since LDH indicates the breakdown of tissue, as it also occurs in pneumonia and pulmonary fibrosis, according to a journal press release. “In Covid-19 patients, the increase in LDH indicates the extent and activity of lung destruction,” the researchers write.
