Court: Efteling must adhere to the maximum number of visitors | Inland

In 2016, the nature permit assumed a maximum number of Efteling visitors of 5 million per year. More visitors would lead to more traffic movements and therefore also to more nitrogen emissions close to a Natura 2000 area.

In 2017, 2018 and 2019, Efteling received more than the permitted 5 million visitors per year. Local residents asked the province to enforce this. The province rejected this request, and the objections to it, three times. That was not allowed, the judge now rules.

The province should have found out whether Efteling has taken measures to combat nitrogen emissions and their effect on nature. The court is also critical of explanations from the province about the measures that Efteling is taking: better research into those measures is needed.

The province must make a new decision within ten weeks about the enforcement request from local residents.
