According to a survey, the state of Bremen has the largest share of bicycle lovers in Germany.

According to a survey, the state of Bremen has the largest share of bicycle lovers in Germany. At 45 percent, almost every second person in Bremen considers the bicycle to be the ideal means of transport, as the representative Yougov survey published on Tuesday for the HUK-Coburg insurance company among more than 4,000 people showed. The other northern states of Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg and Hamburg followed in places two to six.

With 29 percent, Berlin achieved a value exactly in line with the national average and landed in tenth place in the ranking. The Saarland brought up the rear, with 19 percent of the population preferring to ride a bicycle. It was also asked what means of transport Germans expect in the future. When it comes to cycling, Bremen came out on top, followed by Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. With 17 percent each, Hessen and Saarlanders are the least convinced of bicycles as a future model.

Another question was the interest in new bike paths. When asked about the most important topics for the mobility of the future, almost one in four Hamburgers and Berliners named the expansion of cycle paths (23 percent). The two city-states were thus in last place. Higher on the wish list was the cycling network with 38 percent of the inhabitants of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The data was collected on the occasion of World Bicycle Day, which is celebrated on Thursday.
