With an increase of 29 percent, the development of CoV infections in Salzburg is the worst in Austria. Because the 14-day trend is generally upwards, the State of Salzburg wants to look for reasons for the increase. The British mutation could play a role, according to experts.

Almost 2,600 people are currently infected with the corona virus in Salzburg, which is 125 more than on Epiphany. 140 patients are currently being treated in hospitals, 16 of them in the intensive care unit. The seven-day incidence in Salzburg, at 335 per 100,000 inhabitants, is still more than twice as high as in the whole of Austria at 161.
Samples sent to AGES
The local health authorities are now investigating what role the latest mutations of the virus could play, says head internist and infectiologist Richard Greil from the Salzburg University Hospital: “We were the only federal state to have an increase in the number of infections by the end of last week. There are unanswered questions. We are now trying to send more material to AGES (Agency for Health and Food Safety) in the hope that sequencing will take place. The question arises whether the British or the South African virus has already arrived here ”.
Many family and household clusters
There are currently many family and household clusters in Salzburg, where it is unclear where the respective index person was infected for the first time, says State Medical Director Petra Juhasz. In order to clarify the role of the new virus mutation from Great Britain and the virus variant that probably originated in South Africa, samples are currently being genetically sequenced, says Juhasz.
