Corsair MP700 Pro Review: Gen5 SSD with Faster NAND and Cooling Options

In summary

The MP700 Pro, which we tested, represents the crop of Gen5 SSDs with the Phison E26 controller and slightly faster Micron Nand than we have tested so far. The drive performs almost identically to the Crucial T700, but thanks to the heatsink with air cooler, the thermal management is excellent. The drive manages to maintain high performance in endurance tests, but you pay a lot of money for a little more performance in daily use than for a Gen4 drive.

Corsair has given its SSD with PCIe Gen5 interface, the MP700, a hardware update. The new MP700 Pro series has faster NAND on board, so the drive should offer a clearer speed gain compared to Gen4 drives. The SSD should be able to exceed 12GB/s for reading, and for writing that limit would be almost reached. To make these higher speeds possible, not only has the NAND been renewed, but the MP700 Pro is now also available with various cooling options. In addition to the bare M.2 drive, as the MP700 was supplied with, you can buy the MP700 Pro with an air cooler or with water cooling.

Like its predecessor, the MP700 Pro is available in two capacities: 1TB and 2TB. The 2TB version, if properly cooled, should achieve an advertised speed of 12,400MB/s when reading and 11,800MB/s when writing. The 1TB version may make do with an ounce less; reading speeds up to 11,700MB/s and writing speeds up to 9600MB/s, just under that magical limit of 10GB/s. Corsair warns that performance can be hampered by thermal throttling, so adequate cooling is desirable. After all, it is not without reason that Corsair mounts a cooling block with active cooling of a combined height of 20 mm on the SSD.

Naturally, we wanted to compare the MP700 Pro with its predecessor, but unfortunately we never tested it and Corsair no longer wanted to make samples available given the release of the Pro version. We therefore have to make do with comparisons with other Gen5 drives that we have tested, such as the Crucial T700 and the Gigabyte Aorus. We also compared two of the fastest Gen4 SSDs: the 990 Pro from Samsung and the SN850X from WD. The two Gen5 drives in the comparison cost approximately 18 cents per gigabyte, so you pay more than 350 euros for the 2TB drives. The Gen4 drives cost less than half, with prices of around 150 to 160 euros for the 2TB drives. The Corsair drives only have suggested retail prices, but they are neatly at the level of the other Gen5 drives. The 2TB MP700 Pro drive without heatsink costs 365 euros, with an air cooler it costs 385 euros and with the water cooling option Hydro X the recommended retail price is also 385 euros. The 1TB versions cost 220 and 235 euros respectively, but a water-cooled option is only available for the 2TB drive.
