Coronavirus worldwide: more than 240,000 dead, the USA, not surprisingly, the most affected

The new coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 241,682 people worldwide since its onset in December in China, according to a report by AFP from official sources on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. GMT.

More than 3,398,390 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 195 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic. This number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections, with a large number of countries only testing cases requiring hospital treatment. Among these cases, at least 1,023,900 are today considered cured.

Since the count carried out the previous day at 7 p.m. GMT, 6,167 new deaths and 94,645 new cases have been recorded worldwide. The countries with the most new deaths are the United States with 2,518 new deaths, the United Kingdom (621) and Italy (474).

The United States, which recorded its first death linked to the coronavirus in early February, is the country most affected in terms of number of deaths and cases, with 65,645 deaths for 1,121,414 cases. At least 164,015 people have been declared cured.

After the United States, the most affected countries are Italy with 28,710 deaths for 209,328 cases, the United Kingdom with 28,131 deaths (182,260 cases), Spain with 25,100 deaths (216,582 cases), and France with 24,760 dead (168,396 cases).

Among the countries hardest hit, Belgium is the one that deplores the highest number of deaths compared to its population, with 67 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Spain (54), Italy (47), the United Kingdom (41), and France (38).

China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macao), where the epidemic began in late December, officially counted a total of 82,875 cases (1 new between Friday and Saturday), including 4,633 deaths (0 new), and 77,642 cures.

Tajikistan has announced the first two deaths linked to the virus on its soil.

Europe totaled Saturday at 19:00 GMT 142,223 deaths for 1,521,847 cases, the United States and Canada 69,278 deaths (1,177,994 cases), Latin America and the Caribbean 12,533 deaths (234,032 cases), Asia 8,919 deaths (233,465 cases), the Middle East 6,879 deaths (180,721 cases), Africa 1,730 deaths (42,229 cases), and Oceania 120 deaths (8,102 cases).

This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO).
