Coronavirus: which provinces are increasing in contamination and which are decreasing? (MENU)

“The epidemic is gathering strength, it’s not good,” said Sophie Wilmès, this Wednesday, July 15, after the last National Security Council. Stressing an increase in coronavirus contaminations, the Prime Minister preferred to put in brackets, for the moment, the fifth stage of the deconfinement. But if the infections have indeed been going up for a week, this climbing figure concerns in particular some provinces.

Thus, in the ten provinces and Brussels, seven zones record an increase in the number of cases of coronavirus reported during the week from July 6 to 12, compared to the previous week (Antwerp, Walloon Brabant, Liège, Limburg, Luxembourg , West Flanders and Flemish Brabant). Among these seven provinces, it is undoubtedly Liège which knows the most marked increase (+ 114%). Luxembourg (+ 83%) and Limburg (+ 76%) follow.

On the other hand, four zones record a decrease in the number of infections recorded from July 6 to 12 compared to the previous week (Brussels, Hainaut, East Flanders and Namur). The biggest drop is observed in Namur. The province thus sees its number of new cases decrease by 67% compared to the week of June 29 to July 5.

In view of these latest developments highlighting epidemic rebounds concentrated in certain areas, the group of experts in charge of deconfinement (GEES) has proposed to adopt a provincial strategy to deal with a possible second wave. According to information from Standaard, the GEES would plead for the establishment of a color code. The provinces would thus be divided into four zones: green, yellow, orange and red. Stricter rules could then be adopted within the areas affected by an upsurge in the epidemic.
