The opening of borders requires a coordinated approach on a European scale, believes virologist Steven Van Gucht, under penalty in particular of witnessing a form of overbidding between states. Any possibility of staying abroad must in any case be subject to conditions.
It is therefore important to ensure that the health situation in the country of destination is as good as that observed in Belgium. “The figures must at least be as good, the measures must be similar and therefore ideally a European tracking system”, says the scientist on Saturday evening on the Flemish channel VTM.
Currently, all of this is lacking, he said. A European tracking system would, for example, make it possible to learn that a compatriot returning from abroad has been in contact with infected people.
A race to deconfinement?
He hoped that the States would not embark on a deconfinement race, which would lead to a form of competition between the same sectors of two different countries. “Being able to have a drink on the terrace in a neighboring country could in some way be disloyal for the catering industry in Belgium”, comments Mr. Van Gucht. But it is clear that the attitude adopted by the other States to get out of the crisis does not leave the Belgian authorities indifferent. The resumption of the German football championship, for example, exerts a form of pressure on the National Security Council.
