In Korea over 500 cases for the second consecutive day

South Korea reported more than 500 new coronavirus cases for the second consecutive day, the highest level since early March. There are 569 new cases in the last 24 hours which bring the total in the country to 32,887, with 516 deaths. Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun warned that daily infections could rise to 1,000 and lead to a more serious crisis, including shortages of hospital beds if social distancing measures and other restrictions fail to stop the spread.
“The situation is extremely serious and acute, as all 17 metropolitan cities and provinces and in particular all 25 districts of Seoul are reporting new cases,” Chung said.

This week, the government re-imposed strict social distancing rules in the capital and surrounding regions, limiting meals outside the home, religious services and nighttime entertainment. The move came just a month after similar restrictions were eased following the August infection spike. According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, over 64% of new cases come from the Seoul metropolitan area. As of September, South Korea had around 500 intensive care beds for its 52 million inhabitants. The government has promised to double the number by next year.
