Coronavirus origin: The viruses have lived in this animal for a long time

The origin of the coronavirus has always been puzzled. In a recent study, researchers were able to show that corona-related viruses had been present in this animal for decades.

About the Coronavirus origin there are numerous theories and studies. Recent research suggests that corona-related viruses have existed in bats for decades. And that long before the virus began to spread to humans in 2019 and put the human species at risk.

Coronavirus origin proven in bats

How exactly the corona virus spread to the world’s population, whether it was due to the consumption of temporarily illegal wild animals in China or not, has still not been definitively proven. But a study by researchers at Penn State found that there is a high probability that the coronavirus origin is found in bats.

The so-called horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus affinis) in particular is suspected to be the source of the new coronavirus. The SARS outbreak of 2003/2004 could already be traced back to this bat. Consequently, snakes or pangolins are not necessarily the origin of the coronavirus, as earlier studies assumed, but only an intermediate host for the virus, if at all.

This would have found the origin of the coronavirus earlier

Epidemiologist Maciej Boni and his colleagues from Penn State compared the genetic patterns of the new coronavirus (SARS-Cov-2) and 67 related viruses. The analysis should serve to trace the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and to check which transfers took place between the genetic material of the various coronaviruses in order to form the currently rampant coronavirus Covid-19.

In the magazine “Nature Microbology”, the scientists reported on July 28, 2020 that SARS-CoV-2 is not a combination of the genetic material of different coronaviruses. The high risk of infection of the virus, its ability to attack human cells more quickly, is therefore not a mutation due to the recombination of previous coronaviruses. According to the researchers’ estimates, the traditional line of SARS-CoV-2 formed sometime between 1948 and 1982 and has lived in bats for decades.

In theory, the coronavirus could have broken out much earlier. Finding, examining and treating horseshoe bats could prevent similar pandemics in the future, concludes Researcher. That was previously known about the coronavirus origin. Is this shrimp seller Patient Zero in the corona pandemic? Or is that Corona originates from a laboratory in China?
