Coronavirus – New York observes increase in hospitalizations of children – Belgium

(Belga) The omikron variant continues to spread in the United States, where New York health authorities note a rise in the number of children hospitalized with COVID-19.

The New York State Department of Health “is closely monitoring an upward trend in pediatric hospitalizations related to COVID-19,” the department said. “The strongest increase is in New York City, with hospital admissions quadrupling” between the week of December 5 and December 19. Half of these admissions concern children younger than 5 years, who are therefore still too young to be vaccinated. The number of COVID-19 cases in the US continues to rise, with an average of nearly 190,000 new cases a day over the past seven days, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University. The White House promised on Sunday to quickly resolve the shortage of tests in the country. The new variant and the end-of-year celebrations created a rush on the corona tests in the US. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House’s chief adviser on the fight against the pandemic, assured that this shortfall would soon be resolved. (Belgium)
