The Permanent Mission of Mexico to the United Nations has presented this Friday a draft resolution to the body that proposes “effective” access to medicines, diagnostic tests, vaccines and medical equipment required to combat the coronavirus pandemic.
According to a statement released by the Mexican Foreign Ministry, the project, ‘International cooperation to ensure global access to the medicines, vaccines and medical equipment necessary to face the Covid-19 pandemic’, constitutes a continuation of what the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, raised at the G20 meeting held last week.
Specifically, López Obrador exposed the possibility of the UN assuming an “active” role to guarantee access to these supplies through “effective and solidary” international cooperation.
In this context, the Government of Mexico has specified that this initiative, coordinated by the Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, “is not only compatible”, but is also “complementary” to the document published by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, on shared responsibility and global solidarity to face the pandemic.
“These are times to act in solidarity and avoid monopolistic or speculative practices that increase costs and delay the recovery of the world population,” the Mexican Foreign Ministry said in the statement.
Thus, the document presented by Mexico to the United Nations also alludes that governments and the private sector “must work together” to accelerate research and development of technologies to “share the benefits that the new antiviral drugs and vaccines will bring. Are developing”.
“It is about avoiding the hoarding of supplies and that the benefit is for all those who need it, under strict principles of fair distribution, efficiency, safety, equity and affordability,” López Obrador’s executive has insisted.
Globally, the coronavirus pandemic, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has so far left more than 58,000 dead and the number of those affected exceeds one million.
