Coronavirus: Mexican triplets tested positive at birth

In Mexico, triplets of newborns have tested positive for coronavirus, an “unprecedented” case, according to local health authorities.

Medical experts are investigating whether the disease may have been transmitted through the mother’s placenta during pregnancy.

Two of the babies, a boy and a girl, are in stable condition in a hospital in the state of San Luis Potosí. But the second boy is treated for a respiratory illness.

A spokesperson for the state health security committee said the contagion in multiple births has not been detected anywhere in the world and that the case would therefore be investigated.

It is known that a very small number of newborns contracted the virus after birth, but health officials say they do not believe this is what happened in this case.

Parents are being tested, authorities believe they may have been asymptomatic.

Mexico has recorded more than 185,000 cases of coronavirus and 22,584 deaths since the country’s first case on February 28.

The triplets born prematurely on June 17 were all tested positive for coronavirus on the day of their birth. The presence of coronavirus in newborns is unusual, but not unknown. Babies can get the virus after birth if they have close contact with someone who is already infected. Coronavirus can also be transmitted in the womb from mother to baby via the placenta
