Some 1,500 Swiss tourists have not paid the bills sent by the Confederation for their repatriation at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The total costs due amount to 1.7 million francs.

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) had decided to request a lump sum for the repatriation, a spokesperson told Keystone-ATS on Sunday, confirming information from the SonntagsZeitung. Other countries have done the same.

This amount ranged from 400 francs for the shortest flights (up to 1,500 km) to 1,700 francs for flights exceeding 12,000 km. It is about a “reasonable participation, corresponding to the market price of a ticket”, had underlined the FDFA in a press release at the end of April.

A total of 7,100 people received an invoice. At the end of the payment period, 1,500 invoices have not been paid, said the spokesperson for the FDFA. If the recalls are not paid, the services of Ignazio Cassis do not exclude initiating prosecution procedures depending on the situation.

35 vols

The Confederation organized a total of 35 flights between March 22 and April 29 to repatriate Swiss stranded around the world, as well as some foreign nationals. Total cost of the operation: ten million francs. Sharing costs with travelers should cover 80% of this amount. The FDFA will contribute the remaining 20%.

At the same time, more than 1,500 Swiss nationals were able to return home thanks to flights organized by other states.
