Coronavirus in China. A strain less powerful than Sras but more contagious

The new coronavirus, which infected nearly 2,000 people in China and killed more than 50 patients, “is not as powerful” as the SARS virus that caused a deadly epidemic in 2002-2003, but is is more contagious, senior Chinese health officials said on Sunday.

Appeared in Wuhan (center) in December, the disease belongs like the SARS (Severe acute respiratory syndrome) to the family of coronaviruses, transmitted between humans and resulting in particular in severe respiratory disorders. SARS caused 774 deaths worldwide (including 349 in mainland China and 299 in Hong Kong).

A less powerful coronavirus

However, as we see now, this disease is not […] not as powerful as Sras said Gao Fu, head of the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, at a press conference in Beijing. Nevertheless, it appears that the virus’s ability to spread has increased , nuanced by his side Ma Xiaowei, head of the National Health Commission.

The new virus has an incubation period of up to two weeks and contagion is possible during the incubation period, observed Mr. Ma, noting that this too is very different from Sras.

Stem the spread

The crisis occurred in the middle of a Chinese New Year game, a period of seven public holidays usually marked by massive transhumance across the country. However, these leaves are the best window of opportunity to stem the spread of the virus, officials said. If transport restrictions are successfully implemented, they could save time to prepare for the next step in preventing and controlling the epidemic, said Li Bin, NHC deputy minister.
