Coronavirus: Greece, outbreaks in hospitals worry

(ANSAmed) – ROME, AUGUST 20 – Greek health authorities are on alarm after an increase in cases of covid-19 in some hospitals has been registered, forcing all staff returning from vacation to take tests for coronavirus before resume work. According to Kathimerini, at least 20 cases were recorded in two hospitals in Larissa, in central Greece, while another 14 were reported to the Ahepa hospital in Thessaloniki, which was closed until Saturday to proceed with sanitation. Other scattered infections are recorded in other health facilities in the city. In August, 70 health workers have tested positive so far.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who recommended strict compliance with the protocols, discussed the situation by teleconference with health officials. However, the newspaper writes that the Ministry of Health directive on tests on returning from vacation is not easy to implement, as many small hospitals have to do swabs in external facilities.
Yesterday the National Organization of Public Health (Eody) reported 217 new cases, of which 16 reported at the borders, and three deaths. Greece’s total is now at 7,684, with 235 deaths.
The increase in cases has led to new restrictions in two of Greece’s most touristy areas, the island of Mykonos and the Halkidiki peninsula in the north. From Friday until August 31, religious processions, parties, open-air markets and gatherings of more than nine people are prohibited, both in public and in private. Masks are mandatory in public places outdoors and indoors throughout Mykonos and the Halkidiki region. (ANSAmed).
