Coronavirus: French people are no longer always welcome abroad

Mongolia announced the first Covid-19 case in its territory on Tuesday. The person concerned is a Frenchman who did not respect the quarantine period. Other countries, like Senegal, have also seen the coronavirus enter the territory through a compatriot. Faced with this, more and more states on the globe have set up special rules targeting French nationals, the country becoming an increasingly important epidemic center every day.

Several countries have announced that they are taking official quarantine measures for French people entering their territory. They must therefore stay away for a period of 14 days. This is what Armenia, Uganda, Mauritius and Chad apply, for example. A decree issued on March 5 introduces a similar measure in the Russian capital, Moscow.

This March 11, Colombia formalized the isolation of people from Italy, Spain, China and France. Vietnam has also indicated that it is temporarily suspending the unilateral visa waiver that the country normally grants to eight European countries, including France.

More radical, other states have announced an outright ban on French entry. The Marshall Islands have banned all flights to their territory until March 22, a restriction which obviously affects the French. Arrivals by sea are also prohibited for 10 countries including France. Neither can French nationals enter North Korea, Saudi Arabia or El Salvador. For its part, Israel announced that French people who do not reside in the country cannot enter it. If they have a residence there, they must then respect a confinement period of 14 days. Other partial border closings are expected to follow in the coming days.
