Coronavirus.- Brazil appoints an immunization program coordinator three months after Fantinato’s departure

He resigned a day before testifying before the commission investigating the management of the pandemic in Brazil

MADRID, 6 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Brazilian Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, has appointed Ricardo Queiroz as the new coordinator of the National Immunization Program, three months after Francieli Fantinato left office, according to the Official Gazette of the Union.

Queiroz is a professor of pediatrics and coordinator of the Graduate Program in Health Sciences at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS). Throughout her career, she has developed studies in the area of maternal and child health and in epidemiological and social issues that affect the health of mothers and newborns, reports the G1 news portal.

In the area of vaccines, Queiroz is currently working as the principal investigator of a clinical trial of a dengue vaccine at the Butantan Institute. He is also actively involved in studies on the application of vaccines in children, with an emphasis on immunization against rotavirus.

According to Queiroga, Fantinato asked to leave his position in the immunization program, which he had held since October 2019. He resigned a day before testifying before the commission that investigates the management of the pandemic in Brazil.

During his testimony, he listed a series of barriers that were holding back vaccination against COVID-19 in Brazil and claimed to leave office due to the “politicization” of immunization and statements by the authorities that question the effectiveness of vaccines.
