Coronavirus, “Better to get vaccinated against the flu”: the video of the primary unleashes the No vax

One minute and 44 seconds, 101 thousand views reached in the wake of the hatred of conspiracy theorists and no-vaxes. The video made by Niguarda on “Coronavirus and return from vacation” is the most viewed since the opening of the hospital’s Youtube channel. A brief recovery in which Professor Massimo Puoti, head of the Infectious Diseases department, explains what Covid risk behaviors are on vacation and invites you to get vaccinated against the flu. Guidelines told calmly that have reached a flood of users, to the amazement of the hospital itself. Usually Niguarda’s videos are clicked by a few hundred, at most thousands of users.

Looking at the more than 200 comments, many of them negative, however, we understand that the clip was “pushed” by those who trust little or nothing in doctors. “All you liars will pay for it”, “scam”, “another (sic) slave of the regime “,” no vaccine regardless of its function “are just some of the messages left to accompany the short monologue of the primary. And not even the most aggressive. «We have a population of experts ready to express opinions on anything – Puoti jokes -. Freedom of speech is everyone’s right. However, it is clear that if these people manage to have a significant following, problems can arise ». But before the part destruens, it is good to analyze the scientific content disseminated on Youtube. For the post-vacation period, the head physician invites those who have found themselves in situations at risk of contagion to evaluate the idea of a tampon and to monitor suspicious symptoms. For the autumn, the advice is “anti-influenza and anti-pneumococcal vaccination for all the categories indicated”, such as the over 65 and the chronically ill. “Pneumococcal infection can cause septicemia, meningitis and pneumonia,” Puoti continues.

With the ongoing Covid-19 epidemic, defending yourself from other viruses and bacteria is even more important. «We must reduce the overload for diagnoses and treatments in hospitals – reasoned the head physician -. Mortality also increases in winter due to the flu ». This year it will be even more difficult to implement the vaccination plan. On the one hand there is the need to avoid crowding in clinics and doctors’ offices, on the other hand the rush to vaccines will make it more difficult to guarantee them quickly to all those who request them. “But I want to look at the glass half full – says Puoti -, with the use of masks and compliance with anti-Covid regulations, the transmission of other diseases will also decrease”. Experts are then studying a hypothesis: those who catch the flu and in the following weeks are infected with the coronavirus, would run more risks of serious forms of the disease. Flu vaccination would be even more useful.

Yet the scarce two minutes in which Puoti explains these things on the web have been widely criticized. «The vaccine is not mandatory – he reflects – it is up to us to convince people. And its individual and collective value must be taken into account. As a doctor, I also do it so as not to infect patients and colleagues ». The attitude towards the health personnel is also surprising, which emerges from the harsh comments that are very different from the “thanks” that multiplied in the hardest months of the epidemic. “I don’t think the consideration has changed. We went back to the the status quo before the emergency ».

Lombardy is also organizing the autumn anti-flu campaign. For those over 65, the aim is to protect 75 percent of citizens. It will begin with frail patients from the second-third week of October, while at the beginning of November it will be up to the elderly and nursing homes and at the end of the month to children. “The campaign will start too late – attacks the councilor pd Carmela Rozza -. Thus Lombardy puts its citizens at risk ».
