coronaproof playing outside in the mud

The corona crisis seemed to throw a spanner in the works, but now that primary schools and childcare centers are open again, ModderDag continues. But in adapted form. This year, the day may only take place at nurseries and schools, previously other organizations were also allowed to participate. IVN reports this.

Muddling corona proof mainly means planning. That is why IVN advises not to organize a Mud Day but a Mud Week. Mud activities can take place all week to spread the crowds. Another tip is to let children play in one place but in several places. By creating multiple mud spots, there is more room for discovery and creativity. Playing in multiple places means that schools and childcare centers can make small groups that can play at their own pace.

Do not invite parents to ModderDag

Adults should take a step back this year. Mud Day is there to let children discover, but especially this year giving space by adults is extra important. That is why IVN advised against schools to invite parents. By taking photos and videos, parents can still enjoy what their children have done today.

Extra attention for outdoor games

In 2013, ModderDag was organized for the first time in the Netherlands. From 2016, the day will be organized by IVN, Institute for Nature Education and Sustainability. IVN wants to give children the best nature lessons in the world. Especially now, attention for playing outside is extra important. Children have more and more screen time, and mainly play indoors. As a result, they often suffer from overweight and psychological complaints. By playing outside, children improve their physical and mental health, IVN said.
