Corona virus: more fatalities than Sars epidemic – politics

The death toll from the new corona virus exceeded the Sars pandemic 17 years ago. With 89 new cases of lung disease, which the Chinese health authority confirmed on Sunday, the total number of victims worldwide has increased to 813. According to the WHO, 8096 people fell ill and 774 died in 2002/2003 from severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars). The number of confirmed infections from the new corona virus rose in China on Sunday by another 2,656 to 37,198 cases. So far, more than 300 confirmed infections have been confirmed outside of China.

Except for one victim in the Philippines and one in the Hong Kong SAR, all deaths have occurred in mainland China – most in the particularly hard-hit Hubei province, where the virus originally broke out in Wuhan City. So far, 780 people have died in the province.

“The federal government has decided to allow further returnees from Wuhan to land in Berlin,” said Health Senator Dilek Kalayci (SPD) on Saturday. Around 20 returnees are due to land on a special machine on the shielded military part of Berlin-Tegel Airport this Sunday. According to dpa information, there are also children among them. When the machine was supposed to land in Berlin was initially unclear.

According to the health administration, the returnees are being received by an official doctor in Tegel. It should check whether passengers experienced symptoms during the flight. They will then be housed in an isolation area in the clinics of the German Red Cross in the Köpenick district on the south-eastern outskirts of Berlin. All passengers would be tested for the corona virus. A result is expected for Monday noon.

A clinic spokeswoman emphasized that the returnees would be accommodated in an administration building, completely separate from regular patient care. The care staff is provided by the German Red Cross and does not belong to the staff of the DRK clinics in Köpenick. “This strict spatial and personnel separation contributes significantly to the safety of the staff, visitors and patients in Köpenick,” said a DRK spokesman.

According to the current plans, the returnees should stay in the hospital for 14 days, be examined and treated if necessary. The city is well prepared for this, said Kalayci. The processes in Berlin would be coordinated by the Senate Health Administration. After the arrival of the returnees, further details will be given at a press conference on Sunday. Just over a week ago, around 100 German citizens and family members had arrived in Frankfurt am Main with a Bundeswehr aircraft.
