Corona virus: Jens Spahn reckons with distance rules “over months”

The distance requirements and tightened hygiene rules are in the opinion of the Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) apply for a long time. He expects it “for months”, he said on Sunday evening in the “heute journal” on ZDF. “Until there is a vaccine, we will have to take care of each other and each other.”

Spahn pointed out the importance of the health authorities, who have to clarify the infection chains and identify contact persons. Chancellor Angela Merkel said: “It must be our goal to be able to track every chain of infection.” Practitioners complain that this is not guaranteed.

“There are problems in certain areas,” said Spahn. The health authorities have so far “not received the attention they deserve”. He added: “We want to strengthen them in terms of personnel and also digitally.” It is known that additional personnel capacities are to be created in public health services – at least one team of 5 people per 20,000 inhabitants.

The planned app Spahn said that it should be possible to follow up any contacts anonymously “over the course of May”. “Especially when it comes to data protection and data security, it has to be as perfect as possible before we start.”

Schäuble rejects accusations of undermining democracy

Meanwhile, Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU) has defended the actions of federal and state governments in the corona crisis against the charge of undermining democracy. “We are not overriding parliamentary democracy, we are able to act,” said the President of Parliament on Sunday evening in the ZDF “Today Journal”. “Of course we cannot debate for months in such a situation, so we have to make a decision.” Parliaments could also correct government decisions. A majority in the Bundestag is behind the government’s course.

It is also not the case that parliamentary operations are paralyzed. The Bundestag will meet this week with the tried and tested distance arrangements. Parliamentary debates could not be replaced by video conferences. “Parliament is taking place,” said Schäuble. “We decide the things that legislators have to decide.”
