Beijing. The number of fatalities in China due to the novel corona virus has increased significantly again. As reported by the national health commission on Saturday, 86 people have died as a result of the infection since the previous day – all but five in the central Chinese province of Hubei. The official total death toll from the epidemic in mainland China and Hong Kong rose to at least 722.
This is more than the Sars epidemic 2002/2003. At the time, almost 650 people died in mainland China and Hong Kong as a result of Sars’ respiratory disease, which was also transmitted by a coronavirus.
3,399 other cases of infection
According to the Commission, a further 3,399 cases of infection with the novel corona virus have been recorded since Friday. The total number of illnesses in China grew to more than 34,500. Hubei is the center of the epidemic, the pathogen had started from the metropolis of Wuhan.
From China, the corona virus has spread to more than two dozen other countries. There are now 14 confirmed cases of infection in Germany.
