RAKYATKU.COM – A study by Australia’s national science agency shows the coronavirus that causes Covid-19 can survive on surfaces such as banknotes and cell phones for up to 28 days in dark and cold conditions.
The agency said researchers at the CSIRO disease preparedness center tested SARS-CoV-2’s resistance in the dark at three temperatures.
According to the agency, Monday (12/10/2020), the results of the study show that the level of virus resistance decreases when conditions get warmer.
The scientists found that at 20 degrees Celsius, SARS-CoV-2 was “very active” on smooth surfaces, – such as cell phone screens – lasting 28 days on glass, steel, and banknotes.
At 30 degrees Celsius, the resistance level drops to seven days and slumps to just 24 hours at 40 degrees Celsius.
The researchers said the virus survived shorter on porous surfaces like cotton. Whereas at the lowest temperature, the corona virus can last up to 14 days and less than 16 hours at the highest temperature.
According to the results of a study published in the journal Virology, the findings show the coronavirus can last “much longer” than findings in previous studies which found it could last up to four days on non-porous surfaces.
The journal uses peer-reviewed evaluation methods or has been reviewed by one or more people with equal competence to the author.
Trevor Drew, director of the Australian Center for Disease Readiness, said the study involved drying a sample of the virus in different materials before testing it. Testing is done using a “very sensitive” method that can find traces of live virus that can infect cell cultures.
“This is not saying that the amount of the virus will be able to infect a person,” Drew told ABC television.
He added that if someone “is not careful with these substances and touches and licks your hands or touches your eyes or nose, you could become infected within two weeks of being contaminated.”
