Corona outbreak in emergency shelter Hengelo: 21 positive tests | Inland

Since the end of October, about a hundred refugees have arrived in the Hazemeijer complex in Hengelo, Overijssel, for a period of four weeks. 21 of them have already tested positive, the municipality reported in a press release on Tuesday. Those who tested positive were transferred by the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) to another location, in the nearby village of Laag Zuthem. This is a so-called fallback location.

Last weekend, one of the residents appeared to be struggling with corona-related complaints. “This person was immediately tested and turned out to be positive. All other residents were then tested by the GGD on Monday,” the municipality said.

Quarantine

The 21 who tested positive were ‘immediately removed from the group’. “So they no longer stay in Hengelo. The residents who have tested negative will remain in home quarantine in the Hazemeijer complex for the next few days. Not all of them have had two vaccinations yet. The same rules apply to this group as in a household where someone has been tested positive. They will stay at home and will be tested again on Sunday.”

According to Hengelo, “infections in these numbers” are now the order of the day in the region and the outbreak in emergency shelters is therefore “not unique.” “But it is extra annoying for this group that the refugees who have tested positive have to be transferred to another location, while they have often already had a terrible journey. The refugees are now informed via interpreters about the rules that apply in the Netherlands in such a situation. Fortunately, they see the importance of the measures that are needed now.”
