Corona outbreak in China: Shijiazhuang metropolis closes | Abroad

The city, with about 4.3 million people in the urban area and about 7 million people in the immediate vicinity, has launched a massive test campaign, Reuters reports. Meetings are prohibited from now on. According to state television, the main train station is off limits to passengers. That is a further tightening, after a negative corona test was already required to enter the city.

Shijiazhuang is located about 250 kilometers southwest of the capital Beijing.

A patient with the highly contagious South African variant of the corona virus was discovered in the South Chinese province of Guangdong on Wednesday. Some scientists are concerned about this variant. They have doubts about the efficacy of vaccines against this mutated coronavirus.
