16.08 More hospital admissions
The number of corona patients in hospital has risen to 261, the highest number since the end of June. Compared to Wednesday, the number of patients admitted has increased by fifteen. In Amsterdam and Rotterdam, patients have been relocated to nearby hospitals, but the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS).

15.55 Groups
There may be a restriction on group sizes in cities where the number of infections increases quickly. It is one of the measures currently on the table during the consultation between the cabinet and the mayors of Leiden, Haarlem and the four major cities. That reports De Telegraaf.

The number of corona infections is mainly increasing in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. The spread can be traced back to the catering industry and parties in a domestic environment, especially among young people. In a press conference on Friday, the cabinet will announce new measures that will be taken locally.

In the past 24 hours, 1,756 people have been tested positive for the corona virus. Yesterday there were 1542. One person less was admitted to hospital than yesterday: 14. The number of deaths did increase. That has gone from 2 to 6.

14.51 Tourist attractions receive many cancellations
Tourist attractions in North and South Holland are receiving cancellations from German and Belgian visitors, now that these countries advise against traveling to the provinces due to the flaring up of the corona virus. At Duinrell amusement park in Wassenaar, for example, almost all Germans and Belgians who had reserved an overnight stay and a visit to the park for the coming month have postponed their booking to next year. And that while the eastern and southern neighbors are currently the largest group of foreign visitors.

14.47 Rijksmuseum is concerned about travel advice
The negative travel advice from Germany and Belgium due to the coronavirus flaring up in North and South Holland is disastrous for the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and other museums in the region. That is stated in a response from the museum.

13.09 WHO raises the alarm about the spread of coronavirus in Europe
The World Health Organization is raising the alarm about the speed with which the coronavirus is spreading in Europe. The new infections reported in September should be a wake-up call, according to regional director Hans Kluge. The virus seems to be spreading faster in many EU countries. Germany reported on Thursday the highest increase in the number of corona infections since April. Another 2,194 people were diagnosed with the contagious virus.

12.28 Laboratory capacity insufficient
GGDs cannot test even more people for corona because the capacity of the laboratories in the Netherlands is insufficient for this. “It is not possible to scale up now because there is insufficient lab capacity available for corona tests”, says a spokeswoman for GGD GHOR Netherlands.

11.38 Comeback virus
Prime Minister Mark Rutte warns that the corona virus is making a comeback. According to him, it is now time to ‘turn the tide’. The prime minister wants to ‘do everything to prevent a second wave’. This should be ‘voluntary where possible, compulsory where necessary’. Earlier in the day, the Inspectorate reported that the GGDs and test laboratories cannot handle a possible second wave. An extension of the testing capacity is needed. The inspectorate calls this an ‘enormous task’.

11.17 Zoos need to reorganize
All major zoos have to reorganize to survive the corona crisis. That says Erik Zevenbergen, the director of the Association of Zoos (NVD) Nu.nl. “It is not the case that zoos cannot collapse,” says Zevenbergen. The Beekse Bergen, among others, is affiliated with the NVD.

11.02 Production of masks
The brand new Haarlem mouth mask manufacturer HMK Medical wants to increase its production considerably in the coming period. In October, the company expects to produce 700,000 mouth masks per week, compared to more than 400,000. Ultimately, the goal is to achieve a weekly production of one and a half million units.

The eight must be in home quarantine in the coming period, but the Vitesse-Sparta premier division match will continue on Saturday.

11.00 More overtime
Employees are working even more overtime due to the corona crisis. Research by payroll service provider ADP shows that the average overtime in Europe per week has increased by one hour to six hours per week. In all areas surveyed, people worked more unpaid overtime since the corona outbreak compared to six months earlier.

10.41 Test system not ready for second wave
The Dutch test system for the coronavirus is not yet ready for a possible second wave. The testing capacity must be further increased, the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ) notes after research in all 25 GGD regions. The inspectorate calls the expansion that is still necessary an ‘enormous task’ for the GGDs and laboratories involved.

10.29 Cabinet is in a hurry
The cabinet is speeding up the regional approach to the new corona virus. Together with the security regions, it will publicize any additional measures “in order to provide as much clarity as possible in communication”, Minister of Health Hugo de Jonge reports to the Lower House. The minister calls the steady increase in the number of infections in recent weeks ‘worrisome’.

10.16 Slimming down pre-vocational secondary education exam
The upcoming central exam for VMBO students should be ‘slimmed down’. As a result, students should be given more time to really learn the skills for the work they hope to do, for example in construction. Due to the measures taken as a result of the corona crisis, they have now had far too few practical lessons. That’s what Paul Rosenmöller, chairman of the VO Council, said on Radio1.

07/10 Debt banks
Banks in Europe may slightly increase their debts until the end of June next year. The European Central Bank (ECB) has decided that. The central bank points to the exceptional circumstances due to the corona crisis. De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) is taking over the measures for smaller banks.

09.24 Track cycling
The Dutch track cyclists will not participate in the European championships in November in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv. Cycling association KNWU has decided to remove the tournament from the program, because ‘code orange’ currently applies to Bulgaria in the corona crisis. This means that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that you only go to the Eastern European country for necessary trips.

08.50 Baronie TV during carnival
Baronie TV in Breda will broadcast during carnival. It was previously announced that they would skip a year due to corona. But the board has reversed that decision.

08.42 Employees Antoni van Leeuwenhoek infected with corona
A number of employees at the Blood Collection department of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (AVL) have been tested positive for the corona virus, the hospital announced. The risk of contamination of patients is small, according to the hospital. The personnel were immediately tested when they showed minor complaints. The employees who tested positive were already at home awaiting their test results.

07.13 Worrying
Healthcare workers worry ‘often and for a long time’ about the possible consequences of the corona virus. Nine in ten (88 percent) suffer from this and without a good approach it can lead to massive emotional exhaustion and loss. The IZZ foundation warns against this, a collective that works on behalf of 417,000 people for healthy working conditions in healthcare.

06.45 Unemployment
Unemployment in the Netherlands increased further in August, but less sharply than in previous months. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), there were 426,000 unemployed last month, which is 4.6 percent of the labor force. In July this was 4.5 percent. Between May and June, unemployment rose as a result of the corona crisis from 3.6 percent to 4.3 percent. That was an unprecedented rapid increase.

06.00 Investors
Dutch investors are quite gloomy about the duration of the economic crisis caused by the corona pandemic and think the recovery period will be long. Remarkably, however, they do not allow themselves to be discouraged: the majority have increased the risk in their investment portfolio or left it intact. Return expectations for the next five years remain very high. This is evident from the Schroders Global Investor Study 2020.

05.43 Increased risk
The relaxed quarantine guidelines for ‘indispensable care workers’ must be dropped. That is what interest groups NU’91 and V&VN say in the Volkskrant. According to the guidelines of the RIVM, healthcare workers are allowed to work in case of great need while they pose an increased risk. According to NU’91 spokesman Michel van Erp, healthcare workers do not understand this, because they often work with vulnerable people.

05.36 German test lab
A large German laboratory that offered additional corona testing capacity was banned by the Ministry of Health (VWS) with the requirement that a Dutch-speaking doctor should be available. With this, VWS helped to shield the market. This is reported by research platform Follow the Money, which has documents in its hands.

03.20 VMBO students
VMBO students are at risk of having to take exams that they are not equipped for due to the corona crisis. Pupils of the vocational pre-vocational secondary education (basic and management) courses missed about thirteen weeks of practical lessons before the summer holidays. Although they were sometimes given a practical assignment at home, most of the material was not covered, it reports AD.

23.30 Horeca
Koninklijke Horeca Nederland (KHN) fears that the government wants to take extra measures with the increasing corona infections that may also apply to the catering industry. For example, KHN is afraid that a mandatory closure from midnight will be introduced in some large cities, among others. “KHN thinks it is unfair that catering entrepreneurs are once again duped by the possible additional measures, while the behavior of society changes daily”, says KHN chairman Robèr Willemsen.
