Corona: Lower Franconian clinics reduce predictable operations

The clinics in the Würzburg district limit operations that can be planned to a minimum in order to maintain free capacities in view of the high number of corona infections.

Uniklinik Würzburg: Plannable operations postponed

At the University Hospital of Würzburg (UKW), non-urgent operations and interventions are being postponed until further notice, according to the BR request. Nevertheless, the clinic management expressly advises that patients with acute, urgent illnesses should continue to be admitted to the university clinic. Patients whose postponable operations do not take place for the time being would be informed in good time. 35 patients with Covid-19 are currently being treated in the university hospital, 13 of them are in the intensive care unit. The medical director Prof. Georg Ertl describes the situation in the intensive care medicine of the Würzburg university clinic as “tense”. Above all, the personnel situation is “very tight” and a constant challenge. The VHF could increase its capacity of intensive care beds to a maximum of 160 in an absolute emergency. Then, however, operations in all other departments would have to be reduced to a minimum.

Klinikum Würzburg Mitte: Number of procedures reduced

Only a reduced operating theater is still running at the Würzburg Mitte Clinic (KWM), which combines the clinic of the Juliusspital Foundation and the Missioklinik. “The situation here is increasingly tense,” said clinic spokeswoman Daniela Kalb, describing the situation at the KWM. Planned operations have not yet been completely stopped. Since the end of last week, however, the number of interventions has been reduced significantly in order to have more beds available for the care of Covid 19 patients. Employees of the surgical departments would have informed all affected patients by telephone about the postponement of their intervention and discussed the further procedure. Emergency care and interventions that cannot be postponed are still possible without restriction. 22 patients with a confirmed corona infection are currently being treated as inpatients at the KWM, four of them in the intensive care unit. The current situation is “an enormous challenge” for all clinics in the region, says Daniela Kalb. In the past few days, the KWM has supported other hospitals in neighboring districts and taken Covid 19 patients to the KWM for further treatment.

Main Clinic Ochsenfurt: OPs cut back sharply

At the Main Clinic in Ochsenfurt, the number of interventions that can be planned has been reduced significantly since the beginning of November. According to clinic managing director Christian Schell, the reason was the massive corona outbreak in the Ochsenfurt senior citizens’ home Fuchsenmühle. In the meantime, this hot spot has eased off somewhat, said Schell. Nevertheless, the adjustable operating program is still being kept at a low level; only three of four operating rooms are in operation. There are currently two patients with positive corona tests and five suspected cases in the Main Clinic Ochsenfurt. In terms of intensive care, they do not currently have to care for a patient, according to the managing director. The Main Clinic still has intensive care beds available for emergencies.

Aschaffenburg-Alzenau Clinic only operates in emergencies

As of today, all operations that can be planned at the Alzenau-Aschaffenburg Clinic will be postponed and only emergencies or oncological interventions will be carried out. The clinic announced this and justified the decision with the fact that free capacities must be maintained, both in the beds and in the medical and nursing services. The clinic is reacting to the persistently high number of corona infections in the region. Patients who are affected by the cancellation will be informed by the clinic. 43 patients with a confirmed Cororna infection are currently being treated at the Aschaffenburg-Alzenau Clinic. 15 patients require intensive medical treatment. At the clinic in Erlenbach in the Miltenberg district, some operations that are not absolutely necessary are postponed.

Main-Spessart Clinic: The personnel situation is tense

The Main-Spessart Clinic is responding to the currently high number of infections in the Main-Spessart district. The number of planned interventions and examinations has been reduced for two weeks. From today until probably January 11th, the Main-Spessart Clinic is tightening this regulation again and is now completely stopping planned interventions and examinations, the company spokeswoman said. We do this in order to continue to secure emergency care and hospital operations. 17 Covid patients are currently being treated in the hospital in Lohr, one of them in the intensive care unit. The personnel situation is tense. By discontinuing the planned treatments, the staff situation will be relieved. The Lohr Clinic is also supported by the staff of the currently closed geriatric rehabilitation in Marktheidenfeld.

Klinik Kitzinger Land makes new decisions about operations every day

At the Kitzinger Land clinic, the current situation is still manageable. Whether operations due to Corona can take place as planned or, if necessary, postponed would have to be decided anew every day. A team meets three times a week to discuss the current occupancy situation, said Thilo Penzhorn, CEO of the Kitzinger Land Clinic, to the BR. “Basically we run the surgery program all year round in a reduced form,” continues Penzhorn. This is of course also associated with financial losses for the clinic. The legislature does not give large compensation payments for this. If corona patients are admitted to the clinic, he must also provide ventilation options for everyone, even if it may not be needed in the end. Six corona patients are currently being cared for in the Kitzinger Land clinic. Four people make use of intensive care services, two patients are in the normal ward, according to Penzberg. Overall, the clinic has new intensive care beds available.
