After carnival, Brabant is struggling with the corona hangover. With Oeteldonk at the head of the contamination polonaise, that number has shot up like a rocket: no less than 1 in 18 residents of Bosschenen received a positive test result last week. This is evident from RIVM data.
Many Oeteldonkers have already heard from each other in WhatsApp groups: the festival of red-white-yellow was celebrated exuberantly. But since then, reports of positive corona tests have been teeming.
We also see this in the corona figures of the past seven days. 5.5 percent of the population of Bossche has tested positive for the corona virus. This makes Oeteldonk the frontrunner in our province when it comes to established infections. In the past 24 hours alone, 1,608 residents of Bosch received a positive result. In the whole of the Netherlands, only Eijsden-Margraten in Limburg scores higher.
Highest infection rate
In the national top 20 of places with the highest infection rate, there are 10 Brabant municipalities:
- Den Bosch with 5.5 percent
- Land van Cuijk with 5.2 percent
- Sint-Michielsgestel with 5 percent
- Roosendaal by 4.6 percent
- Oosterhout with 4.5 percent
- Moerdijk with 4.5 percent
- Vught with 4.3 percent
- Steenbergen with 4.3 percent
- First with 4.2 percent
- Heusden with 4.2 percent
This is indicative of the Brabant-wide increase: about 100,000 people tested positive for corona last week, compared to 31,000 a week earlier.
Many companies are suffering from this contamination explosion. Various catering businesses are temporarily closing their doors, because many employees are in isolation at home.
Several operating rooms in the Jeroen Bosch Hospital are closed due to staff failure. In addition, hospitals ask some employees with corona to come and work after all. Otherwise, acute and complex care would be endangered.
Expected increase
Experts already predicted a sharp increase in the number of corona infections after carnival. The popular festival fell exactly at the time when many measures expired.
Alma Tostmann, epidemiologist at Radboudumc in Nijmegen, expects that the corona peak will not last very long. “Carnival has such a high density of contacts that you can’t match it in normal life,” she told the newspaper a few days ago. US.
Hospital admissions
The increase in infection is likely to lead to more hospital admissions soon. That is not yet clearly reflected in the figures. There are 216 corona patients in Brabant hospitals, 23 of whom are in intensive care.
