In the intensive care units, beds are becoming scarce again due to Covid-19. Patients have already had to be transferred in the canton of Schaffhausen, and the wards are also filling up in Zurich. In this situation, there is little point in putting more beds and ventilators in the rooms. Because there is a lack of highly specialized staff. However, there are vacancies in the intensive care units.
Actually there is hope. The nursing apprenticeships are in great demand. For example, the Bachelor’s degree for qualified nurses has 70 percent more registrations than in the previous year at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences. Apparently, the Corona crisis has awakened many young people’s desire to help. And with the counter-proposal to the care initiative, the Federal Council is now promising a training offensive against the shortage of skilled workers.
