Corona Delta Plus AY.4.2 Not Found in Indonesia

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Researchers in the field of microbiology from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences Research Center for Biology (LIPI) Sugiyono Saputra said the new variant of Delta Covid-19 named AY.4.2 has not been found in Indonesia.

Previously, AY.4.2, which is a subvariant of the delta strain of the corona virus, was first discovered in the UK. The variant is a descendant of the SARS-CoV-2 lineage which has recently increased in frequency in the UK.

The variant is claimed to be a descendant of the Delta B.1.167.2 variant which has been confirmed by the Israeli Ministry of Health also mentions that the AY.4.2 variant has arrived.

in that country.

“It seems that AY.4.2 has not been found in Indonesia. There is no information yet whether it has entered or not. What already exists is AY.4 alias B.1.617.2.4. This is a different type of variant. But they are both dominant in England, ” said Sugiyono to CNNIndonesia.com, Thursday (21/10).

Spike Y145H and A222V were found in the lineage of the Delta B.1.177 variant that developed in Europe in summer 2020.

However, the analysis and follow-up performed indicated that the lineage likely lacked an inherent transmission advantage.

Its spread is most likely due to demographic processes, as suggested sciencemediacentre.org recently.

“But we have learned that mutations can have different, sometimes unexpected, effects on different types,” said Professor Francois Balloux, Director of Computational Systems at the UCL Institute of Genetics and Professor of Biology.

Currently, the AY.4.2 variant is being closely monitored in the UK and elsewhere. Before moving to Israel, it is known that there were only three cases detected in the United States related to the variant.

In Denmark, a country other than the UK which is considered to have excellent genomic surveillance, the frequency of the new variant is said to have reached 2 percent. However, the transmission has been going down for a long time.

“AY.4.2 is still at a fairly low frequency with a 10 per cent increase in transmission and has resulted in only a small number of additional cases. Therefore, its presence does not encourage the recent increase in the number of cases in the UK.”
