Corona crime does not pay: Gerard M. and Eddy B. turn to jail Inland

Gerard M. from Amersfoort, aged 61, was 4 years old and 52-year-old Eddy B. from Oldenzaal was sentenced to three years in prison. The court in Zwolle is considerably lower because it does not consider it proven that the duo defrauded the state. According to the court, evidence for this is lacking. The suspects did attempt to launder 880,000 euros that was transferred to the bank account of B.’s company.

In March, during a global shortage, the state searched diligently for face masks for healthcare workers. The state bought 11 million mouth masks via a Dutch website. After a deposit of 880,000 euros, ten trucks were ready to collect the material, but they never had to drive. The state was found to have been defrauded.

There is no evidence that B. and M. were behind that fake site, the court claims. The men did know that they were laundering criminal money.

B. transferred tons in a few days. At least 125,000 euros of this went to M.’s accounts. When his bank account was blocked, M. tried to mislead the bank with false documents. About five tons came to a suspected third suspect via an English account in Nigeria, but the banks intervened quickly when transactions turned out to be questionable. The amounts were refunded to the account of B. after which the Public Prosecutor seized that account.
