If the parliament goes to the final vote, the regulation for the introduction of the Corona warning app should also be available, says Sang-Il Kim from the Federal Office of Public Health.

The responsible Federal Councilor Alain Berset has once again explained the considerations regarding the app in parliament.

There has been much controversy about the Swiss Covid app, which warns who has been in contact with a corona infected person. Parliament has insisted on a legal basis that is now essentially ready. The councils have made some adjustments, such as free tests if you get a warning from the app. And: If the app does not deliver what it promises, it should be abolished.

As soon as Parliament finally gives the green light to the final vote on June 19, the regulation should also be ready, as Sang-Il Kim from the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) says. “It is planned that it will come into force on the same day,” said Kim. The date is not set in stone. “It may also be the next calendar day.” But then the much-discussed app would finally be introduced.

No warning in the test phase
So far, the trial version of the app has been downloaded around 60,000 times, according to Kim. For the time being, however, only those who are part of the selected test group from administration, military and health personnel are warned. It is not an experiment on a living object: So far, no one has been warned by an app – because no one from the test group has contracted the corona virus. Only one case is now known from a military barracks, says Kim, the question now is whether the person in question is using the app.

“Given the low infection rate, it was always unlikely to have positive cases within the test group,” said Kim. But that was not the goal of the test phase either. Instead, the focus would be on feedback on usability and technical teething problems. “We have successfully eliminated various mistakes.”
