On stage, Corey Taylor (46) looks like he’s two meters tall. His wild gestures, rough voice and elaborate costumes give him a supernatural aura. When the singer of the successful metal band Slipknot shouts his anger into the crowd of his fans, there doesn’t seem to be much human behind the mask – not even last Wednesday in Zurich. When Taylor entered the interview room in the backstage area of the Hallenstadion a few hours earlier, he was only 1.70 meters tall. His personality still fills the whole room.

«When I’m standing on stage masked, there is nothing more for me than Slipknot. I’m going into the dark, »Taylor explains the transformation. “My everyday worries, any reluctance, self-doubt – everything falls away from me.”

«We are regular guests in physiotherapy»
Their stage show should be one of the reasons that Slipknot are still at the top of the metal scene 25 years after their founding. «Slipknot is always intense. There is no concert where we can take it easy, »explains the singer. But this madness comes with a price: «We were almost all on the operating table and are regular guests in physiotherapy. My knees still hurt around the clock after two operations. »

Taylor couldn’t live without Slipknot. Also because the music helped him fight his demons. Taylor was sexually abused as a child and has been battling depression and his drug and alcohol addiction for years. “I was able to close with my past,” he says today. When he learned to love himself, he also overcame his addiction problems: «I wanted to destroy myself with alcohol and drugs. Today I have a family, friends, my music. Reasons never to return to this nightmare. »

To this day, Taylor has not been able to overcome a bad habit. “I need coffee. I usually drink five cups in the morning. » For him it was clear: “A truck is needed by man.”
