Coordinating Minister Mahfud Md urges focus on program in elections, not primordial differences

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud Md wonder why primordial affairs are often the reason for differences in elections. In fact, what should be used as a difference is the affairs of the program.

Initially Mahfud alluded to the hadith of the prophet delivered by Aisyah who said that the Prophet Muhammad was sent to earth to bring religious teachings that were straight but tolerant. On that basis, he is confused as to why differences in primordial affairs often become a problem during elections.

“Therefore, brother, I don’t know if we are going to have an election, what are we going to do with matters of difference, sometimes primordial differences are used as an excuse,” Mahfud said at the halal bihalal event held by the Association of Indonesian Muslim Scholars (ICMI) at the Borobudur Hotel, Jakarta, Friday (12/5/2023).

According to KBBI, primordialism is an attitude of upholding things brought from childhood, both traditions, customs, beliefs, and everything that exists in the environment. Returning to Mahfud, he said the differences at issue in the election should be about the program.

“Our program is important for all children of this nation to meet constitutional requirements, comply with legislation, so we allow them to compete,” he said.

“Each of us has support, that’s okay because in the framework of the sawa sentence earlier. I went through this door, I went through this door,” he added.

Mahfud also said that the community should work together in building good things, regardless of their background, or in religious language it is called Kalimatun Sawa. People don’t want to fight on the grounds of slight differences.

“Why do we want to fight with things that are slightly different, while others can cooperate a lot,” he said.
