Cookies from ‘Squid Game’ go viral on social media | Nina cooks

Have you seen ‘Squid Game’ yet? The South Korean series is well on its way to becoming the most popular series ever on Netflix. And the craze continues on social media. A specific sugar cookie gets a lot of attention on TikTok: users massively show how they make the sweetness and then eat it carefully.

In ‘Squid Game’, 456 adults are taken to an inaccessible island to play ‘a game’. Whoever is left at the end gets to go home with a huge sum of money. Each episode sees the chosen ones participate in children’s games, such as marbles, tug-of-war or 1-2-3 piano, but whoever loses is eliminated in cold blood.

Surreal and morbid, yes, but the story has viewers worldwide on the edge of their seats. And it makes them wonder: would they survive the assignments themselves? It is therefore not surprising that many people try out the challenges at home. Especially the challenge of eating a cookie gets a lot of support.

Ppopgi

It’s about a ppopgi, also called dalgona cake or honeycomb. A typical South Korean cookie that is usually sold at schools. The children can first choose a mold, which is pressed in the center of the sweet, and then they have to eat around the impression without breaking the sweet. Can you manage that? Then the children often receive a reward, such as a toy or a free ppopgi.

Since the release of ‘Squid Game’, the dalgona cakes have taken the world by storm. People worldwide are crawling into the kitchen to make the delicacy, remove the edges afterwards (usually with a needle, just like in the series) and eat the rest according to the rules. The hashtag #squidgamecandy has been viewed more than 616 million times on TikTok. The hashtag #honeycomb already has more than 943 million.

Would you like to try it too? The recipe is simple. Child’s play, almost. All you need is a wooden ladle, a flat-bottomed bowl, a small saucepan, three tablespoons of sugar, a good pinch of baking powder, molds of your choice, and a sheet of parchment paper.

Preparation

1. Put the sugar in the pan and let it melt. Stir well so that the sugar caramelizes evenly and does not burn.

2. When the sugar has turned brown, add the baking powder. Keep stirring.

3. When everything is well mixed, you should get a golden beige color. Pour the mixture onto a sheet of baking paper.

4. Count to 10 to 15 seconds. Just before the sugar hardens, flatten the cookie. You can use the ladle or, for example, the flat bottom of a bowl.

5. Create a figure in the cookie of your choice. You can use a baking pan or a sharp knife for this. Do not push all the way to the bottom as it will be too easy to remove the edges of the cake.
