Controversy Surrounds Closure of Bicycle Path on Plantage Middenlaan

The closure of the bicycle path on Plantage Middenlaan will remain: after Spuistraat and Marnixstraat, a bicycle street will also be built here. A street where cars and cyclists drive side by side and cyclists have priority. To the frustration of cyclists and the Fietsersbond: “I prefer to just ride on the bicycle path.”

Many cyclists ride every day on the Plantage Middenlaan, which is part of the main cycle route. Some of them no longer find it an issue to have to enter the roadway from the cycle path. “I ride here every day, I’m getting used to it slowly,” says one cyclist. “It is a bit uncomfortable, but you see such situations more often in the Netherlands,” says another passerby.

Saar Muller of the Fietsersbond is dissatisfied with the current situation. She sees, also on the Spuistraat, how the traffic is now. “Vulnerable cyclists no longer dare to cycle and fast cyclists ride on the sidewalk to avoid the cars when it is too busy.”

It started a year ago with a temporary closure of the cycle paths due to work on the Hollandsche Schouwburg and the Holocaust Museum. According to the municipality, the test went well. The district committee has therefore advised the Centrum district to continue with the closure.

The spokesperson for alderman Melanie van der Horst informs AT5 that it is important that cyclists can get from A to B as safely as possible.

“It helps if there is enough space for cyclists. Detached cycle paths don’t just disappear. On the Kattenburgerstraat, the separate cycle paths have been retained. While on the Kinkerstraat, cyclists have more space than before thanks to the bicycle lanes. In the spring – when 30 kilometers per hours has been introduced – there will be a trial in which fast cyclists can cycle on the roadway in order to create more space on the cycle path.”
