Controversy Surrounding Historic Villa Nothaft in Vöcklabruck: Legal Battle over Preservation

VÖCKLABRUCK. There is currently a lot of discussion about the historic Villa Nothaft on Bahnhofstrasse. The wish of the municipality of Vöcklabruck to preserve the classicist villa cannot be legally enforced.

The owner family can no longer maintain the property and would like to sell the villa and the land. The most promising buyer is a non-profit housing association from the district.

An examination of the property by the Federal Monuments Office came to the conclusion that the building was not worth protecting. “That was a shock for us as a city. We expected a different answer,” reports Mayor Peter Schobesberger.

The city then stipulated the ‘preservation of the building fabric’ in a new planning area by means of a local council resolution. This decision was deemed illegal by the state of Upper Austria. “This means that our legal remedies have been exhausted. My heart bleeds, but if this house is torn down, the city council can’t stop it. Only the monument office can protect the villa, and that won’t happen,” continues Schobesberger.

A consolation, according to the mayor: “Affordable living space is being created that is future-proof. Everything can be reached on foot in just a few minutes.” The train station, kindergarten, school center and town square are just a stone’s throw away. There are also discussions about integrating life support into the project, which the municipality considers positive.

The mayor firmly rejects a purchase by the municipality: “That would be crazy. We need every cent for kindergartens, kindergartens, cycle paths and the maintenance of our infrastructure. I’m not going to burden the taxpayer with the purchase and maintenance of a historic villa as a multi-million dollar mortgage for eternity!”
