Controversy over Monument to the Soviet Army, Documents Show Dismantling Halted

New developments in the case with the Monument to the Soviet Army. BSP leader Kornelia Ninova showed documents with which the Ministry of Culture stops the dismantling of the monument. Meanwhile, a controversy broke out between embassies, journalists and MPs because of the suspended broadcast of an interview with the Russian ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova on BNR.

Through her profile on social networks, Ninova showed the document, which, according to her, came from the Inspectorate for the Protection of Cultural Heritage at the MK. It states that the Monument to the Soviet Army is included in the list of immovable historical cultural heritage. The documents presented by her are dated December 14 this year – two days after the start of the dismantling.

“And orders the regional governor of Sofia to immediately stop all actions of cutting and moving the Monument to the Soviet Army. Immediately!” explained the BSP leader.

The dismantling of the monument, which continues today, predictably again provoked political reactions.

“I am in favor of moving the monument to a museum. When I see how heads, arms, legs are cut off – it’s like some kind of violence against the monument. This annoys people”, is the opinion of GERB leader Boyko Borisov.

“The claims that there is any illegal activity are absolutely unfounded,” Iskren Mitev from the PP-DB is categorical.

“If Israel has Hamas, we have the District Administration, which terroristically, without a corresponding administrative act and without law, cuts brutally”, stated Maya Manolova from “Stand Up. BG”.

Another scandal surrounding the monument was the interview of the journalist Petar Volgin with the Russian ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova, which was stopped by the BNR leadership. Less than 24 hours after its announcement, the Ukrainian embassy came out with a position against Mitrofanova’s visit.

“Participation of a representative of an aggressor state in a national media broadcast is not a discussion or an exchange of opinions, but an undisguised support of the Kremlin regime,” the embassy of Ukraine in Bulgaria claims.

About an hour later, Delyan Peevski, the law-sanctioned “Magnitski” deputy and chairman of the PG of the DPS, came out with a similar position. “I express my great concern about the announcement of the upcoming visit of the Russian ambassador on the air of one of the most influential public media – BNR”, he states.

The saga with the Monument to the Soviet Army: Why there were protests and a boycott in the parliament

This morning, from a post by the presenter of the program on BNR, Petar Volgin, it became clear that the Program Board of the radio decided not to broadcast the recording of the interview with the ambassador of Russia.

“Delyan Peevski objected to the participation of Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova on the National Radio. The program board of BNR banned the broadcast of the interview with her. The leaders said that there was no connection between the two things,” Volgin pointed out.

On the air of BNR, the general director of the media, Milen Mitev, explained that the interview was not broadcast because it violated the editorial standards of the media. Meanwhile, the Russian embassy also came out with a position.

“The decision of the BNR – obviously, made not without pressure from the outside – causes only bewilderment and disappointment,” commented the Russian mission in our country.

The leadership of the BNR came out with a position in which it considers inadmissible and categorically rejects attempts to interfere in the editorial policy of the media. “When conducting the interview with Ambassador Mitrofanova, Art. 5 of the Code of Ethics and points 7.3, 8.1 and chapter 13 of the editorial standards, which require interviews to be impartial, not appear favorable to the position of the interlocutor and regulate the principles when covering military actions and positions of warring parties. Therefore, on the basis of item 13.1 of the Editorial Standards of BNR, the Program Board recommended to the management of the “Horizon” program that the interview not be broadcast on the air”, they specify from the national radio and add: “We find the suggestions of censorship to be inadmissible and speculative”.
