Controversy in Umeå: Is the ‘Quiz Elite’ Taking Over?

The pub quiz has grown explosively in Umeå in recent years.

Now one threatens submitter in VK with a boycott – if nothing is done about the so-called “quiz elite”.

– It’s like banning Armand Duplantis from competing, says organizer Magnus Egerbladh Öberg, 48.

Every evening, several quizzes with music and contemporary questions, so-called quizzes, are organized in the pubs around Umeå.

But now a controversy has flared up after an entry in Västerbottens-Kuriren with the headline “Don’t let the quiz elite take over all of Umeå!”

The senders with the signature “Two frustrated normal talents”, believe that the top teams are ruining the quiz climate in the city because they always win.

“Our proposal is that the three largest teams should be limited to one quiz a week, alternatively compete for separate podium places. If this is not remedied immediately, the rest of Umeå’s population will soon boycott the quiz for lack of better conditions,” they write.

Quiz elite’s answers

Anna Wallmark, 46, belongs to the so-called “quiz elite” together with her teammates in “Fire Saga”. But she thinks the word feels misleading.

– It is clear that there are top teams, but the word “elite” does not sound very good. I would call us “quiz enthusiasts”. It’s not like we elbow our way forward. In addition, we don’t always win, sometimes there are upstarts who take first place, says Anna.

She opposes the proposal to limit the top teams.

– I understand that there is frustration, but I don’t see how it would work administratively. It’s not just about winning either, the social side is just as important, says Anna.

“Up to 500 competitors”

Magnus Egerbladh Öberg, 48, is the organizer behind several quizzes held in the city.

– It has become very popular. If you want, you can quiz every day of the week and we can have upwards of 500 contestants at our events, says Magnus.

He agrees that there are a handful of teams that often take home the podium finishes.

– People are very loyal to the pubs where the quiz is held. All places have their top teams, even if there are upstarts sometimes, says Magnus.

“Like banning Duplantis”

But he is critical of the submissions’ proposal to limit participation.

– It’s like banning Armand Duplantis from competing just because he wins too much. In all competitions there is someone who is the best, says Magnus.

At the same time, Anna Wallmark believes that the sender should not be taken too seriously.

– Even though there is competition, there is often a good atmosphere at the quiz. Everyone is of course welcome regardless of how many points they get and if they don’t have anyone to join, they are welcome to join our team, she says.
