Controversial Decision Made by National Commission on Energy and Public Utilities Raises Water Tariffs

“Today, a message appeared from the National Commission on Energy and Public Utilities about raising water tariffs. To put it mildly, a shameful decision. Unprofessional. Not agreed with the government. We cannot and will not calmly accept such decisions. The government was instructed to submit response decisions. And they will “, he stated.

What exactly these decisions will be, Zelensky did not specify.

Context:

NEURC June 29 accepted decision to adjust tariffs for water supply and sanitation for 34 water utilities in Ukraine. As a result, the country’s average water tariffs will increase by 32% from July 1. The NEURC expects that the average payment for a family of two or three people will reach UAH 256 per month (an increase of UAH 62 per month).

The size of the tariff in each region is different, the average for the country is 39.37 UAH per m³. Full list of decrees with new tariffs published on the NEURC website. At the same time, tariffs for water consumption in cities that have been significantly affected as a result of hostilities remain unchanged. These are Kharkov, Nikolaev and Kherson.

The commission said that the tariff increase was due to an increase in electricity costs by an average of 14%; a 13% increase in wages for workers at water utilities; an 88% increase in the volume of purchases of reagents, and licensees’ obligations under loans – 60%. In addition, compensation for the cost of electricity from the beginning of 2023 is taken into account.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said he instructed Energy Minister German Galushchenko and the Ministry of Infrastructure to conduct additional consultations with the NEURC on the possibility of reviewing such decisions.
